FEATURED RUNNERS

SHAHN.
Shahn has been an active and loyal DRC member since March of 2022. Not only is he a champion at chess having competed at the national level, but he is also a NYC marathoner, having completed it this year! We love you, Shahn and are grateful to have you in our community! You contribute so much as both a member and leader.

How long have you been running?
Started intermittently during the pandemic. Consistently running for about 2 years.

Why did you start running/continue to run?
Despite always being active in some form or another, I always had a hard time sticking with activities long term. I joined DRC as a way to have community support and keep me motivated. It worked and I've crossed milestones I didn't know I was capable of.

How did you get involved with DRC?
I first learned about Dyckman Run Club at the 2022 Washington Heights 5K. Later that same week, I showed up to my first Cardio Thursday and have been running with DRC for almost two years now. I always struggled with running more than just 1-2 miles and always assumed running wasn't for me. With proper training and advice from fellow DRC members, I completed my first 10 mile run (in 95 degree weather), my first half marathon by the end of 2022 and ran the NYC marathon this year.

Fun facts about Shahn:
I used to play chess competitively at a national level. My school was consistently ranked #1 in the country.

What is your favorite route?
Mindlessly running through Fort Tryon and Inwood Hill Parks. The escape from cars and city living while still being so close to home is therapeutic.

What can’t you run without?
Open Shokz Pro headphones

What’s your favorite run shoe?
Brooks GTS Adrenaline. It's the only one of the many I tried that doesn't give me shin splits.

Any piece of advice?
If you want to go fast, go slow. If you want to run far, run with DRC.

TAYLOR.

Taylor has been a DRC member for almost 2 years and is part of the corporate leadership team here. She credits DRC with inspiring and helping her land her current role working with @nyrr. Taylor says, “Dyckman Run Club is where I have met some of my closest friends in NYC, where I was inspired to enter the lottery for the TCS New York CIty Marathon, and where I was literally cheered on and encouraged every step of the way ensuring that I successfully completed my first-ever marathon.”

How long have you been running?
About 14 years

Why did you start running/continue to run?
My mind moves fast and my body can't keep up... running helps me feel more in sync. Also, I have terrible hand eye coordination when it comes to sports like tennis, basketball, soccer, and beyond.

How did you get involved with DRC?
I moved uptown in February of 2022. I went to an Open Run with NYRR and believe I asked about other local run clubs and I kept hearing about Dyckman Run Club. It took a couple weeks, but on March 10, 2022, I did my first run with Dyckman Run Club and have not looked back since. Dyckman Run Club is more than a run club: it's a community, it's a movement, it's my chosen family. I have spent holidays with DRC, trained for my first-ever marathon with DRC, and made some of my closest friends through DRC. I would travel the world with DRC. In fact, I plan to run a marathon in Italy with a fellow DRC member in 2024. DRC is so warm, welcoming, energetic, and brings enthusiasm and upbeat music 🎶 and attitude to every run. DRC has made me a stronger runner, better person, and all around happier human!

Fun facts about Taylor:
Taylor joined a Zoom karaoke group during the pandemic that still meets on Zoom and has held three in-person Karaoke retreats, gathering friends from all over the country and world that met online during the pandemic.

Any piece of advice?
"Just don't give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there is love and inspiration, I don't think you can go wrong." -Ella Fitzgerald

LUIS.

How long have you been running?
Started running in the Fall of 2003, & then transitioned into beach volleyball in 2013, & paused running in the Fall of 2014. I resumed running in the Fall of 2022 with DRC.

Why did you start/continue to run?
I started while looking for relief to get away from worries and sadness after a breakup. I started running seeking peace of mind and well-being. I continue to run as me-time for mental, physical, and emotional well-being, for fitness, and for socializing. It brings me satisfaction to share the joy of running to people in my life (as my friend Ryan did with me in 2003).

How did you get involved with DRC?
On 10/27/22, I joined Cardio Thursday & was moved from the moment I got to Dyckman Plaza. I felt the energy & everyone was so friendly and welcoming (even though no one knew me!). I signed up and became a DRC member. I was asked to become a pacer and DRC leadership, and it has been a blessing. This is what was missing and what I had been craving when I stopped running back in 2014. I feel alive again and excited to be part of a group and community that gives back!

Fun facts about Luis:
I was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. Inwood has been my home since I moved to the US in 2001. Perhaps the hills and the park, the vicinity to the Hudson, my closest family members living here, the nearby access to mass transit, the music and vibrant community, Inwood is my home. I’m Bilingual. I enjoy learning languages & running numbers in excel. I graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering & have been working in business development, sales, & project management on energy-related projects. I enjoy playing sports & being active. Growing up I played baseball, soccer & basketball. I enjoy scuba diving, biking, hiking, running, walking, beach volleyball & stand-up paddle boarding. Terrible voice, yet I enjoy karaoke. I am a running guide to other athletes through Achilles. I have run 15 race marathons & over 45 half marathons.
